Paul Poiret was born in Paris in 1879 into a solidly bourgeois family. The son of a cloth merchant, he followed an apprenticeship to an umbrella maker after his baccalaureat. Poiret was actually more interested in couture and began to sell his drawings to couturiers from la Rue de la Paix (Madame Cheruit bought twelve of his designs). In 1896 Poiret began working for Jacques Doucet and in four years he rose up to the position of Head of the tailoring department. After his military service he joined the house of Worth in 1901. In 1903 he opened his own house on the Rue Auber and moved to rue Pasquier in 1906. In 1909 he was able to relocate to a large 18th-century hotel particulier at 9 avenue d'Antin.
